Siding & Exterior project in progress on a residential home

Siding & Exterior · plan before you hire

Damaged siding can be cosmetic, local, or a sign that water management needs a closer look.

Before replacing an entire exterior, understand where the damage is, what caused it, and whether the underlying wall assembly is affected.

Quick answer

Start with the condition, not the conclusion.

Siding & Exterior — the short version

Localized siding damage may be repairable when matching material is available and the wall behind it is sound. Broader replacement becomes more relevant when damage is widespread or repeated moisture issues exist.

What is included

What a siding & exterior project actually covers.

When a quote is missing one of these, the price difference usually has nothing to do with quality.

Siding & Exterior work in progress

Removal and inspection

Pulling old siding and reviewing sheathing for rot, insects and moisture damage.

Weather barrier

House wrap, flashing at windows and doors, and correct drainage details.

Siding and trim

Panels or planks, corners, soffit, fascia and window and door trim.

Paint and sealing

Factory or field finish, caulking schedule and penetration sealing.

Why homeowners do it

The advantages worth paying for.

The benefits homeowners report most often after a siding & exterior project — beyond how it looks.

Moisture problems addressed

New wrap and flashing fix the leaks that cause hidden sheathing rot.

Much less maintenance

Fiber cement and quality vinyl end the scrape-and-repaint cycle for years at a time.

Comfort improvement

Air sealing and optional insulated backing reduce drafts along exterior walls.

Biggest visual change outside

Nothing else changes how the house looks from the curb as completely as new siding.

Not sure which path fits your situation?

The decision depends on how widespread the damage is, whether replacement material can match, and whether the problem is limited to the surface or includes water-management components beneath it.

Questions

Siding & Exterior FAQs

The questions homeowners ask us most often before they start calling contractors.

Ask your own question

Sometimes, but it hides sheathing condition and complicates flashing. Full removal is the only way to see and fix what is behind the panels.

Most homes take 1–3 weeks depending on size, material, weather and how much sheathing repair is needed.

Fiber cement costs more and is heavier, with a painted, substantial look. Quality insulated vinyl is lower cost and lower maintenance. Both perform well when installed correctly.

Sheathing repair, window flashing rework, soffit and fascia, painting, and disposal fees are the most common exclusions. Ask about each.

Modestly, mostly through air sealing and any added insulation. Treat comfort gains as the benefit, not a specific utility savings promise.
